Halberg Games: Creating opportunity & belonging
Kaingaroa Tipu proudly supported Parafed Bay of Plenty athletes as they competed at the Halberg Games — an event that celebrates ability, builds confidence, and creates lasting connections.
Held at King’s College in Auckland on 11–12 April, this year’s Games brought together young athletes from across Aotearoa. Despite Cyclone Vaianu shortening the programme, the event delivered a powerful experience for the 17 Bay of Plenty athletes who took part.
Our support included funding towards accommodation and providing team hoodies, helping ease the financial burden for families and enabling more young people to attend.
Parafed Bay of Plenty Play & Youth Lead Jo Jackson says this support makes a meaningful difference.
“Events like the Halberg Games can be costly, especially for families already navigating additional challenges. This support removes some of those barriers and allows more athletes to take part. It also helps them feel part of something bigger.”
The impact extends well beyond the event itself.
The Games provide an inclusive environment where young people can try new sports, build confidence, and connect with others who share similar experiences.
“For many, it’s the first time they feel a real sense of belonging in sport,” Jo says. “They grow in confidence, form friendships, and begin to see what’s possible for themselves.”
Seeing the Bay of Plenty squad step outside their comfort zones and give things a go was uplifting, she adds.
“There was so much whakawhanaungatanga — building connections and strengthening relationships. So many smiles, encouragement and support for each other.”
For athlete Dannica Wilson-Spencer, the experience is both personal and transformative.
“Because of Kaingaroa Tipu's support, I’m able to be part of an environment that encourages inclusion, confidence and personal development. It motivates me to keep striving to do my best.”
GM Sustainability Colin Maunder says the partnership, now in its third year, reflects the organisation’s broader commitment to communities.
“Supporting the Halberg Games is about creating opportunity, so young people can participate, grow in confidence, and feel proud of who they are.
“At Kaingaroa Tipu, ‘we grow better every day’ means backing our communities and helping remove barriers so everyone has the chance to thrive.”
We’re proud to stand alongside Parafed Bay of Plenty and support the next generation of athletes — on and off the field.
