Growing better for our customers
Innovating products that utilise the entire tree
Our commitment to innovative forestry systems enables the use of the entire tree, from seed to stem. Our trees are processed into log products to meet demand from a diverse range of customers.
Using industry best processes, these customers convert our products into a wide range of wood fibre-based products.
Pruned & part pruned logs
Our pruned and part pruned logs are highly sought after in the marketplace due to their yield of clean, clear, knot-free fibre. With an increase in demand for wood and wooden products in high end construction, interior design, and architecture, our clearwood is highly regarded in the market. The high quality of this wood enables the production of thermally and chemically modified clearwood for decking, cladding, and appearance plywood products. These processes provide durability and stability throughout the life of the finished product. Our pruned and part-pruned logs are sold almost exclusively in the New Zealand domestic market, meaning there is a good chance wood products purchased in New Zealand are made from KT wood.
Structural & framing logs
Structural and framing logs are used by our local customers to manufacture stress graded timber for stick frame construction. We produce and sell an estimated 1.1M tonnes of structural and framing grade logs each year, which equates to approximately 770 highway truck and trailer loads per week being delivered to our customers.
Post & pole logs
Our Kaingaroa Processing Plant (KPP) is able to boutique manufacture logs for the post and poles sector and currently supplies around 80% of the New Zealand outdoor treated post and pole market due to its unparalleled ability to segregate debarked logs by length, diameter and straightness. Pole logs are available in lengths from 3.7 to 18.1 metres.
Utility & pulp logs
Utility logs by their name offer a wide range of finished goods opportunities to both domestic and export customers. Most are sold to export markets. In contrast pulp logs provide a wide range of opportunities including pulp, paper, renewable fuel, and biochemicals.
Woodchip
KPP produces in excess of 210,000 tonnes of woodchip per year, or approximately 150 truck and trailer loads per week. Stem offcuts from the KPP including pulp logs, along with binwood and billets from harvesting operations in the forest are processed (chipped) to make premium woodchip for the pulp and paper market. Through the precise woodchip screening process, we produce chipper fines which are sold into the renewable fuels market.
Bark
Bark is removed from our whole stems at KPP and from logs at our Murupara Log Debarker, eliminating the need for methyl bromide treatment in logs exported to China. Bark is separated into two main products. The thicker bark from the bottom third of the stem is used by our customers to produce landscape garden products including bark nuggets, compost, and potting mix. The remaining bark from higher up the stem is processed into HOG.
Hog
HOG is the market name given to bark that has been processed through a hammer mill or “hogger”, which breaks it apart and forces the bark material through a grill, ensuring consistent product size. This product can then be used in a number of different applications such as boiler fuel, industrial ground cover, and garden and landscape products. Branch residue is maintained on site in a sustainable manner to provide nutrients for future crops.
