About Kaingaroa Tipu

The globally-renowned Kaingaroa Forest Estate is New Zealand’s largest sustainable plantation forest, spanning 215,000 ha in the Central North Island.

In November 2025 Kaingaroa Timberlands, Timberlands and Forest Genetics rebranded to Kaingaroa Tipu.

It is the responsibility of Kaingaroa Tipu, working with others, to ensure this giant ecosystem continues to flourish. Our careful and sophisticated approach to rotational harvest and low-waste processes consistently improves our eco-sustainability.

Kaingaroa Tipu holds dual certification to both FSC® and PEFC® and we are committed to managing our forests to these high standards.

As the demand for sustainable products continues to grow, our scale and dedication will ensure that our fibre is increasingly used in more products and applications. This commitment and the company’s scale and complexity means we are creating better careers for our people.

With every step we take we make the forest better for our owners, our communities, our people and future generations. By growing better wood, better jobs, a better environment - and a better future.

The Kaingaroa Tipu Brand

Kaingaroa

'Kaingaroa' is central to our brand - the globally renowned Kaingaroa Forest Estate that we manage. It is New Zealand’s largest sustainable harvest forest, the second largest in the southern hemisphere. The estate takes its name from an area that reaches far beyond today’s forest.

We acknowledge that the Kaingaroa stories of each iwi remain theirs to tell.

Working with iwi land owners, we seek to better care for the environment and protect native species and areas of significance. We work in ways that result in better value, in increasingly sustainable ways.

Honouring ‘Kaingaroa’ within our name is one way we acknowledge and remember our shared past, and the many people who contributed to the magnificent forest we know today.

Tipu

Tipu (or tupu) has a range of meanings, expressing different dimensions of the importance of growth across all facets of life:

Tipu expresses:

  • growing, increasing, springing, issuing, beginning, developing, or sprouting.
  • prospering, originating or generating.
  • something being real, genuine or ancestral.
  • seedlings, growth or development; the shoot or bud of a plant.

Growth underpins our commitments across the business. And tipu anchors us within the Te Papa Tipu Innovation Park in Rotorua, where our headquarters are located alongside other innovation and forestry sector organisations.

The KT Logo mark

Behind each single tree stem are generations of the forest, and vast ordered rows of trees nurtured from seedling.

The angled lines of the K represent the daily cycle of growth. Energy from the sun, nourishment from water, the natural abundance of the environment combined with our careful management ensures growth and well being are in a constant healthy balance.

The T of Tipu represents the increasingly sustainable way we work - the steps we take to grow better every day.

The reference to a whāriki weave represents partnering with others and interconnection between the environment and people.
