Apply for a Recreational Forest Access Permit for hunting and/or fishing access

Applications for Recreational Forest Access Permits for hunting and fishing in Kaingaroa and Rotoehu Forests are now closed for the 2025 season.

The Kaingaroa and Rotoehu forests are popular destinations for recreational hunting, fishing, and game-bird shooting. Subject to fire danger levels, recreational access is open to these forests from the first Saturday in May to the last Sunday in September (including any public holidays during this period).

Access is carefully controlled through the Recreational Forest Access Permit process which is managed by our security contractors FIRST Security. Permit applications can only be obtained through the FIRST Security website just prior to or during the hunting and fishing season.

In 2026, you can start the permit application process, which will require you to:

  • Read the Recreational Forest Access Health & Safety Induction
  • Successfully complete the online quiz
  • Complete the Recreational Forest Access Permit Application form and provide the additional supporting documents as requested in the application form.
  • registration fee of $50 per person will be required.
