Apply for a Recreational Forest Access Permit for hunting and/or fishing access

Applications for Recreational Forest Access Permits for hunting and fishing in Kaingaroa and Rotoehu Forests are now open for the 2026 season.

The Kaingaroa and Rotoehu forests are popular destinations for recreational hunting, fishing, and game-bird shooting. Subject to fire danger levels, recreational access is open to these forests from the first Saturday in May to the last Sunday in September (including any public holidays during this period). 

Access is carefully controlled through the Recreational Forest Access Permit process which is managed by our security contractors FIRST Security. Permit applications can only be obtained through the FIRST Security website just prior to or during the hunting and fishing season.

Help us prevent the spread of invasive clams

Gold clams pose a serious and irreversible threat to freshwater ecosystems in our forests. Once introduced, they cannot be eradicated. Prevention is the only effective option, and compliance with biosecurity protocols is critical.
