Recreational Forest Access Health and Safety Induction

Ensuring everyone can enjoy the forests safely

The forests we manage are production forests where commercial operations are being undertaken throughout. The risks and hazards associated with commercial forestry operations can include but are not limited to oversized vehicles, large plant and machinery moving around on our forest roads and forestry workers and crews undertaking various operations throughout the forests.

Any person, 15 years or over, who wants to access the Kaingaroa or Rotoehu forests, for hunting, fishing or game-bird shooting will need to complete a Recreational Forest Access Health & Safety Induction before applying for a Recreational Access permit. This induction covers:

  • Firearms safety
  • Driving in the forest
  • Road conditions and road safety
  • Visibility and weather conditions
  • Emergencies, evacuations, and closures
  • Rules and behaviours including restricted areas

It’s important to remember that you have a personal responsibility for ensuring the health and safety of yourself and other forest users and therefore every person accessing these forests for recreational hunting & fishing purposes must complete their own induction. Applications will not be accepted on behalf of others. This induction will provide you with important safety information and make you aware of the possible hazards you may encounter while in the Kaingaroa and Rotoehu forests.

  • Recreational Forest Access Health & Safety Inductions and Permits are issued by FIRST Security via a two-step process on their website by:
  • Completing the online Recreational Forest Access Health & Safety Induction and questionnaire
  • On successful completion of the induction, you will then be directed to complete the Recreational Forest Access Permit Application form.
