Better logs
The natural advantages of our forests coupled with innovative management practices yield high quality logs used by our customers for high quality end products.
Kaingaroa Tipu manages 215,000 ha of FSC® & PEFC®-certified plantation forests which make up the globally renowned Kaingaroa Forest Estate - the largest contiguous plantation forest in Australasia. This estate includes a cluster of forests on the central plateau in the North Island of New Zealand surrounding the iconic Kaingaroa Forest. From these forests we harvest and market in excess of 4 million tonnes of logs per annum, of which 1.5 million tonnes is processed through our Kaingaroa (whole stem) Processing Plant (KPP).
The natural advantages of the land and climate on which our forests grow yield residues and high-quality logs used by our customers for high quality end products. The central location and geographical features of the Kaingaroa Forest Estate, including flat terrain and pumice soils, create a resilient forest for reliable year-round harvesting, generating an even and consistent supply of log and residue products.
In addition, the scale of the Kaingaroa Forest Estate, together with a sophisticated approach to rotational harvest and constant low-waste processing allows us to maintain and enhance sustainability.
Using mechanised harvesting, in conjunction with the Kaingaroa Processing Plant (KPP) located in the centre of the Kaingaroa Forest, creates a highly efficient supply chain. Our infrastructure supports this further by allowing us to move large volumes of product to market via a private forest road network and connecting rail head at Murupara, resulting in a reduction of heavy traffic on public highways. This helps to reduce our carbon footprint.
Road and rail connections provide fast and efficient transport of our products to domestic markets and connectivity to the Port of Tauranga, enabling regular and efficient shipping to offshore markets.
As the demand for sustainable products continues to grow, our scale and dedication to innovation will ensure our wood fibre is available for use in more applications by our customers. Our ethos is to maximise the recovery and sale of the entire stem creating opportunities for a range of products. Branch residue is maintained and managed on site in a sustainable manner to provide nutrients for future crops.
