Preparing for Cyclone Vaianu
We are actively preparing for the potential impact of Cyclone Vaianu, which is forecast to affect the Central North Island and Bay of Plenty from Sunday 12 April into Monday.
While the exact path and intensity of the system are still being refined, current forecasts indicate a high likelihood of strong winds and heavy rainfall across the entire estate. Based on this, we are taking a precautionary approach to ensure the safety of people, contractors, and the wider community.
Precautionary forest closure
As part of these preparations, the Kaingaroa Forest Estate will be closed from 7:00 pm on Saturday 11 April.
This decision has been made to:
- Remove exposure to hazardous conditions during the peak of the severe weather
- Avoid unnecessary travel to and from our forests during periods of high wind and reduced visibility
- Enable a structured and safe approach to reopening once the event has passed
No entry into the forests we manage will be permitted during the closure period. All our gates will be secured.
Focus on safety and preparedness
We are taking steps to reduce both immediate risk during the event and during the recovery required afterwards.
A provisional reopening is planned for 6:30 am on Monday, subject to a full safety assessment.
Before any access is restored:
- Conditions across the estate will be reviewed
- Key access routes will be checked and cleared where required
- Any damage or hazards will be identified and managed
Re-entry into the forest will follow a phased and prioritised approach, with main arterial routes assessed first. It is expected that access to some areas may be delayed depending on conditions.
All personnel returning to the forest will be required to proceed with caution and report any hazards encountered.
While it is too early to determine the full impact of the cyclone, our team is preparing for a range of disruption scenarios. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Events like this reinforce the importance of preparation, clear communication, and putting safety first.
GM for Sustainability, Colin Maunder, says the priority is ensuring everyone stays safe.
“We have well-established processes for these events and have time to prepare so we are ready to respond when the cyclone has passed.”
