Backing tamariki with a strong start to the school year

A strong start at school sets the foundation for learning, confidence and wellbeing. Through a $5,000 sponsorship, Kaingaroa Tipu has supported Whakarewarewa School to provide every student with a school starter pack at the beginning of the year.

The sponsorship funded school starter packs for all 125 students, including a backpack, stationery and a sun-safe bucket hat. The kits were handed out to tamariki on 27 January, ensuring students arrived at school on day one with the essentials they need to participate fully and confidently.

Whakarewarewa School Principal Boxer Smith said the support has made a meaningful difference for students and whānau.

“Our school community is incredibly grateful for the generous sponsorship and support,” Boxer said. “The contribution has made a significant and positive difference for our whānau.”

He said providing these items helps reduce financial pressure at a time of year that can be particularly challenging for families. “By providing these essential items, Kaingaroa Tipu has helped to greatly reduce the financial barrier that often accompanies the beginning of the school year."

"This allows our students to start school well-prepared, confident, protected from the sun, and ready to engage in their learning, while giving parents peace of mind.”

Kaingaroa Tipu General Manager Sustainability Colin Maunder said the sponsorship aligns strongly with the organisation’s values of care (manaaki), collaboration (mahi tahi) and growth (tipu).

“Caring for our communities, working alongside others, and creating opportunities for growth are core to who we are at Kaingaroa Tipu,” Colin said.

“We grow better every day by investing not only in the forests and environments we manage, but in people. Supporting tamariki at our neighbouring kura on Sala St to have a positive and equitable start to their learning journey is one way we put those values into action.”
